This unit of competency deals with the "Design of electrical installations in or associated with explosive atmospheres." This unit focuses on the competencies required to design electrical power, control and instrumentation systems and installations in areas where explosive atmospheres exist. The Ex 009 exam tests your ability to identify design tasks and develop economical and effective design solutions for explosion protection.
Ex 009 covers the following topics:
To take the exam Ex 009, it is a requirement that you also have the knowledge of unit 001 and have passed that exam (attestation), or take it at the same time as unit 009.
Ex 009 consists of a theory exam only. This exam consists of multiple choice and open questions, which you have to answer within the available time of 120 minutes. You pass the exam when you have obtained at least 75% of the number of points.
The Ex 009 theory exam in English costs € 230,- (excl. VAT).
The Ex 009 theory exam in Dutch costs € 245,- (excl. VAT).
The cost for participation in the Ex 009 practical exam is €485 (excluding VAT).
If there are multiple candidates, contact the Royal PBNA to discuss group exam options.

Upon successful completion of the Ex 009 exam, you can apply for a 5-year IECEx CoPC.
In addition to passing the unit Ex 007 exam, there are some prerequisites for applying for a CoPC:
For the exam Ex 009, you have to prove that you are sufficiently technically trained. For this purpose, we ask you to send documents such as certificates from training institutes and professional qualifications.
You need at least 3 years of experience in general electrical installation design, or installation design in hazardous areas under supervision.
Proficiency in this competency area is assessed concurrently with or after competency area Ex 001 - Applying the Basic Principles of Safety in Explosive Atmospheres.
Scope limitations will clearly demonstrate that the areas of competency apply to both those performing the work and those responsible. Restrictions on the scope of explosive protection techniques, a group or voltage strength, apply to unit 009. Any scope limitations will be included in the application according to OD 502 (it can be found among the downloads at the bottom of this page).
