IECEx

IECEx stands for the International Electrotechnical Commission Explosive (IEC Explosive) Atmospheres System. It is an internationally recognized certification system that focuses on safety in environments where there is a risk of explosion. IECEx focuses on the safety of machinery and equipment as well as the safety of people working in explosive environments.

IECEx 05

The IECEx system consists of several parts. IECEx 05 refers to the certification of individuals. IECEx 05 provides assurance that individuals working in explosive environments have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their jobs safely.

IECEx 05 at PBNA

Since early 2019, Royal PBNA has been recognized as an IECEx 05 certification agency for certifying persons working in hazardous explosive environments. As the first independently operating certification agency in the Netherlands, we only deal with the examination and certification of persons. Our legislation requires adequate instruction of personnel working in hazardous areas.

IECEx 05 examination system structure.

The IECEx 05 examination system is modular. This means that you can take one or more exams depending on your position. The choice of these is often prescribed by your client or employer. The exam of unit EX001: Applying basic principles of safety in explosive environments is the starting module for all other modules. Then, depending on your position, you choose subsequent modules. These modules are also called units in IECEx terms.

IECEx 05 attestation

After successfully completing a theory and/or practical exam, you will receive an attestation from PBNA. This is proof that you have passed the unit in question. The period of validity of an attestation is five years.
If you have completed the units you need for your position, you can apply for a personal certificate (CoPC).

IECEx 05 personnel certificate (CoPC)

Person certifications issued under the international IECEx 05 scheme, or Certificate of Personal Competencies (CoPC), demonstrate that the certified person has the knowledge and skills to safely perform work in hazardous areas. CoPC addresses individuals responsible for the design, selection, installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems in hazardous areas.

With a CoPC, you can demonstrate the required knowledge and skills at companies around the world that have accepted this certification scheme. PBNA provides exams for the different units (ex 000 to ex 010), with and without an option for a personal certificate. So you can choose to obtain only the attestation for a unit, or you can also apply for your personal certificate through PBNA.

IECEx and ATEX

Individuals who obtain person certification according to IECEx 05 know how to work safely in a hazardous area according to global standards (IEC). ATEX certification is also a certification on working safely in a hazardous explosive environment, but is focused on EU standards. Individuals working at a company located in the EU can also opt for ATEX certification.
