Every technician who works on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment where fluorinated greenhouse gases or controlled substances can be released must hold an F-gases certificate. F-gases category 1 and F-gases category 2 are the most commonly taken F-gases exams. If you choose to take the F-gases category 1 exam and obtain your personal certificate, you may then perform all work on installations or equipment with F-gases, without restrictions. With the f-gases category 1 personal certificate, you may work with f-gases on all stationary refrigeration, air conditioning systems and heat pumps, regardless of content, in accordance with BRL 200.

Vanaf 1 september 2025 geldt de nieuwe F-gassenverordening. Dit houdt in dat monteurs en technici die werken met F-gassen een aanvulling op hun persoonscertificaat nodig hebben, gericht op brandbare koudemiddelen zoals R32 en R1234yf.

The category 1 F-gases exam

The F-gases 1 exam consists of a practical and a theoretical part. These take place separately from each other. You take the theoretical exam at a time that suits you at one of the 70+ locations in the Netherlands. The practical exam takes place at one of the PBNA recognized practice locations: Techtec in Almere, Installatiewerk Noord-Holland in Amsterdam, ROVC in Ede and Installatiewerk Zuid-Oost in Roermond.

The practical F-gases 1 exam.

The practical exam consists of three parts:

Soldering and assembly of parts
Acts
Installation & Inspection

You will be given some assignments that you have also practiced during the practical days of the F-gases course in the above topics. You only need to bring your refrigerant slide for this. Everything else will be ready for you, just like during the practical days. Just don't forget your work shoes and long-sleeved work clothes. The practical exam for F-gases 1 takes 5.5 hours.

During the theory exam, you can expect the following:

Exam duration: 45 minutes
Bring: Refrigerant Slide
Passed at: At least 18 correct answers
Result: You take the exam digitally, after the exam you see the preliminary results immediately
Locations: 70+ locations nationwide

PBNA F-gases certificate

With a positive final result on the practical and theoretical exam, you will receive the PBNA F-gases certificate. As many as 78% of the candidates passed the exam in 1x in 2023.

PBNA is an examination agency recognized by the Department of Public Works for conducting F-gases exams and issuing personal certificates in accordance with the BRL 200. The BRL 200 is the Dutch assessment guideline that establishes the requirements that exam candidates must meet to obtain the F-gases certificate for persons.
