BRL 200 for person certification of F-gases

BRL 200 stands for Assessment Guideline 200 and contains the requirements and standards to be met by persons performing work involving fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases).

F-gases are widely used in refrigeration and heating systems. They provide heat exchange by increasing or decreasing the pressure on these F-gases. But if the F-gases are released, they are very harmful to the environment.

This is why the F-gases regulation came into being. Its purpose is to reduce emissions of these gases. Part of this regulation is the BRL 100 and BRL 200. These assessment guidelines indicate what companies (BRL 100) and persons (BRL 200) must meet in order to work with F-gases.

What you need to comply with according to the BRL 200

The BRL 200 states that as a mechanic or installer working with refrigerants, you must pass both a theory and practical exam. The theory exam tests knowledge in the area of F-gases and applicable laws and regulations. The practical exam tests skills related to working safely with F-gases.

It involves the following skills:

Leak check

Skills to detect leaks. Depending on the F-gases category 1 or F-gases category 2 exam, the cooling circuit may or may not be opened in the process.

With F-gases Category 1, the refrigeration circuit may be opened for comprehensive inspection and repair. Category 1 engineers are authorized to perform leak detection in all systems, regardless of the amount of refrigerant.

For F-gases category 2, opening the refrigeration circuit is not allowed. Category 2 technicians perform leak detection without opening the system. In addition, they may only perform work on systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant.

Recovery of F-gases

F-gas recovery tests your ability to completely shut down the system so that no F-gases are released during the process. You must also know how to use recovery equipment correctly to extract the F-gases from the system. Finally, you must store the F-gases correctly.

With F-gases category 1, you may perform these activities without restrictions.

If you obtain F-gases category 2, you may work on systems with a limited amount of F-gases, namely less than 3 kg, or for hermetically sealed systems up to 6 kg. The refrigeration circuit must not be opened during recovery, which means that the internal mechanisms of the system must not be exposed. Only service ports may be used.

Installation and maintenance

Installation and maintenance of systems require knowledge of correctly installing components and performing routine and preventive maintenance.

With F-gases category 1, you are qualified to perform complex installations and maintenance tasks, including connecting and disconnecting components that come into direct contact with F-gases.

For category 2, powers are limited to basic installation and maintenance work that does not require opening the cooling system, focusing on smaller and less complex systems.

More about F-gases

Why take the F-gases exam at PBNA

✓ PBNA is a recognized examination company for F-gas examinations

PBNA is an examination agency recognized by the Department of Public Works for conducting F-gases exams and issuing personal certificates in accordance with the BRL 200. The BRL 200 is the Dutch assessment guideline that establishes the requirements that exam candidates must meet to obtain the F-gases certificate for persons.

✓ Taking the exam at your training site

PBNA cooperates with several training institutions. If you follow a training at one of the following training institutes, the exam will take place at your training location. For you as an exam candidate, this is extra convenient because you can then take your exam with the setups you have also practiced with.

- TechTec in Almere
- Installation work Roermond
- Installation work Amsterdam
- ROVC Technical education in Ede

You can also book your exam at PBNA if you have taken F-gases training at another training institute.

✓ Separate theory and practical examination

The F-Gas exams consist of a practical and a theoretical part. You can take the theory exam at PBNA at a location and time of your choice. That way, on the day of the practical exam, you only have to focus on the practical part. Plus, you can easily schedule a retake if you don't pass in one sitting.
