This unit of competency covers the explosion protection aspects for maintenance of explosion proof and associated equipment and cabling systems, including plant maintenance schedules. This requires the competence to develop and manage maintenance programmes that include strategies for inspections, repair/revision/replacement of components and recording of maintenance results. This includes the competence to carry out a maintenance programme, to work safely, to carry out maintenance according to standards and manufacturer's instructions and to complete the required maintenance documentation.
The applicant must have a level of technical training (or equivalent) relevant to the application, with documents such as certificates from training institutes and professional qualifications, etc.
For an executive, at least 3 years of practical experience in industrial maintenance.
For a responsible person, at least 3 years of practical experience in Ex maintenance relevant to the scope of the competence area for which the certificate of competency is applied for, taking into account the limitations of the scope.
Competence in this area of competence is assessed at the same time as or subsequent to area of competence Ex 001 ( Application of basic safety principles in explosive atmospheres).
Limitations of the scope:
Restrictions on the scope of explosive protection techniques, product types, a group or voltage apply to unit 004. Any limitations on the scope shall be included in the application as per OD 502.

Apply for CoPC:
After successful completion of the Ex 004 exam (theory and practice), the candidate can apply for a 5-year IECEx CoPC.
NOTE 1 This experience may include time spent under general supervision.
Cost of an IECEx Ex 004 exam:
The costs for taking the Ex 004 theory exam amount to € 195,- (excl. VAT) and for a
Ex 004 practical exam € 395,- (excl. VAT).
